Smallmouth Bass. Upper jaw does not extend beyond back of eye. Spotted Bass. Red eye, horizontal lines of dark spots on lower sides, upper jaw does not extend beyond back of eye. As the degree of white spotting increases, the white spreads up the neck and onto the chin (as shown in the three-quarter Persian above). The cheeks may be white or have white spots and there may be a white blaze (an inverted V) from the muzzle up between the eyes or a white teardrop on the nose (as shown in the cat above right)
